Science In A Candle-Watch Mr.Wizard-1964
This episode was chosen by Don Herbert, TV’ Mr.Wizard’, as one of his Top 100 from his famous ‘Watch Mr.Wizard’ TV series which ran from 1951 to 1965 on National Television. During that period the Press named him ‘America’s Favorite Science Teacher’.
While his television fame recognized him as a National Science presenter, General Electric hired him as their Science Reporter
introducing GE’s new technology advances in their commercials during the TV Series ‘GE Theater,’ with Ronald Reagan as their host.
During the 1960s Mr.Wizard created 8 Films featuring Pulitzer Prize Scientists titled ‘Experiment’ presented by Don Herbert, TV’s Mr.Wizard.
He later created and starred in the Nickelodeon Series ‘Mr.Wizard’s World’ which ran for 78 episodes from 1983 to 1991. You can see those episodes and clips on our Official Mr.Wizard’s World Channel on UA-cam!
After Mr.Wizard’s World, he created 293 ninety-second Science & Technology Reports in the late 1980s. Check these out on our channel.
Mr.Wizard’s ‘Teacher to Teacher Series' became Don’s last creation in 1991 when he created 50 films featuring American Science Teachers in their classrooms. They were chosen because of the amazing success they had with their student's learning curve through a ‘hands-on’ approach to grade school science in the classroom.
Mr.Wizard was a frequent guest at the Annual National Science Teachers Association conventions around the country.
Mr.Wizard Studios, over the years, had received grants and support from the National Science Foundation and General Motors for his Excellence in Science Education. Don received commendations from Presidents Ronald Reagan & Bill Clinton for his contribution to Science Education in America. Emmy Nominations and a Peabody Award are among his hundreds of science awards for a career that spanned 60 years and is still ‘edutaining’ moving forward, thanks to his family & Mr.Wizard Studios, Inc. keeping his legacy alive.
In 2014 The Mr.Wizard Archives were accepted into the permanent collection of the Smithsonian’s Museum of American History in Washing, D.C.
The Family of Mr.Wizard carries on his legacy by posting his many science-related shows to further the interest in learning science the ‘hands-on’ way!

Guessing that Alan was 11 at the time he’d be 70 now. It’s amazing how intelligent children were then. I doubt most 11 year old children today would have a clue what was going on. Of course, Alan may have been “coached” and learned some of this in rehearsal. I’ve always found graphs interestingly as they are a nice visual aid (think computer spreadsheet now). It’s great watching these. Like the WayBack machine that Mr. Peabody had on Bullwinkle.

As a retired design engr, I routinely find myself in situations like this, except my "students" are grown adults who thought this was boring in their youth, only to realize how much they missed out on in what goes on in main stream K-12. A d how their day to day experuences and perceptions have been reduced to lobotomized sound bites.

To be truthful, my mother used to lock my bedroom door to keep me inside at night. She was ( justifiably) correct that I might take apart the TV and get killed by a capacitor discharge. Looking back on myself and what I had done, I can see why. I was born in 62 and was dangerous to myself ( and others ) by 1967. Thankfully i never got that far out of control.

It’s a shame that such programs aren’t made anymore. Luckily the Christmas lectures on BBC are still a thing. As a kid I adored these shows and doing experiment. And my nephew now gets into that age of discovery 5.5, so whenever I’m there I have a little trick to show him and his little sister. His sister just loves the attention and being part of it. But he gets to that age that he starts to realize that somethings behave differently than he expects. And seeing his bewilderment and asking “why” or “woahhh!!!” Or me favorite “that’s not normal” 😂Is so much fun.

I made a hot dog cooker this way once. It was just two nails through a board with a cord attached. There was one flaw: the ends of the dog beyond the nails did not get hot.
